Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation Tribal Member

Dr. Deborah A. Miranda is an Associate Professor at Washington and Lee University in Virginia.  She teaches Native American Literatures and is a published poet and author.  Her books reflect

favorite, Novena to Bad Indians).  Dr. Miranda maintains a blog sharing her stories and information about our people.  You can access at http://whenturtlesfly.blogspot.com/. She is working to educate
parents and teachers at 4th grade level on the correct history of the Mission Era, therefore not only educating on the history of our people but of all California Indians and the effect of the Mission Era.

Saleki Itsa Tribal Members and Tribal Council,

On behalf of Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation, I have been asked to speak at the celebration of a United States
Post Stamp honoring Carmel Mission. I find this is a very hard decision with the destruction, slavery and murder of our
ancestors, but I have agreed to speak to honor our Ancestors that built the Mission, lost their lives and are buried in a
mass grave.  I will not honor the Mission.

I am aware that some of our Tribal Members are very involved with the Mission and the Catholic Church. I attend as
the spokesperson for all Tribal Members of Ohlone/Costanoan-Esselen Nation and not on personal religion which is
required by our Constitution of all Council Members.

The event is open to the public on February 28, 2012 starting at 11:00 a.m. This event will be held in the courtyard of
the Mission, in the event of rain it will be moved indoors. All Tribal Members are invited. Please come and honor all of
our Ancestors buried within the area.
